You might want to be extra careful, backpackers.
A Dutch backpacker had been held captive and kept as a sex slave for six weeks in a Melbourne hotel room.
The victim, whose name has been withheld, met Alfio Anthony Granata, 47 at a birthday party in St Kilda. She was kidnapped and had been subjected to beatings and sexual and psychological abuse – being forced to participate in sexual acts, beaten with a meat tenderiser, got stomped on the head, and forced to live and sleep naked in a shower.
As if those torturous acts weren’t enough, the victim was also threatened by Granata that he would have her parents killed at their home in Holland. He added that he had killed 248 people and had global mafia connections.
Granata even went as far as monitoring her phone calls and internet activity and later, confiscated her laptop and bank cards.
The poor woman was no match to her captor as she was ordered not to speak, move or complain. Otherwise, Granata would beat her more.
The 21-year-old was rescued after she stabbed the suspect and then tried to kill herself.
Granata pleaded guilty to 16 charges, including nine counts of rape, one count of intentionally causing serious injury and two counts of making threats to kill.
Will the suspect rot in jail? Here’s to hoping.
Now while backpacking is all about having fun and being carefree, remember that it’s important to take precautions and be wary of your surroundings.
You’ll never know where danger lurks.
